Today the use of meditation cushions is popular and widespread, however such a thing would been unusual to an ancient Buddhist monk. In traditional Tibetan and Zen Buddhism it was not uncommon for monks to replace their mat or cushion only when it was entirely worn out, there is a tale of a Tibetan Buddhist who ended up with calluses from his meditation. Monks in many Zen monasteries meditate on hard surfaces for as long as they can tolerate it.

However many people today prefer to use a meditation cushion to create a more relaxed and more fulfilling experience. The proper name of a meditation cushion is a zafu, and they are available in all sorts of colors, shapes and sizes.

Many meditation cushions featured a raise back to promote the correct posture as well as spine lengthening. With the proper posture in place one can breathe more deeply and gain an increased range of motion and elasticity. Read the full story

The difference between typical meditation and Spiritual Meditation is that the latter requires absolute focus on spirit. Spiritual Meditation is the practice of talking to the Spirit (or God, the Universe, whatever you wish to call it), and the Spirit will communicate with you. In order to meditate you must first focus your mind on a single point. Meditation is a practice that has been recognized by many religions since ancient times. There’s a wide variety of meditation styles to learn, each with its own spiritual and psycho-physical implications. With meditation one can achieve a higher state of consciousness that allows the mind to focus more clearly and reach a serene state.

Proper meditation requires one to sit in a comfortable position in a silent environment, one can focus their mind either on their breathing, on a preferred mantra or on visualizations. To achieve this higher awareness one must learn how the mind works. Once you understand the right thoughts and how they work you will be able to increase your levels of concentration and alertness for a calm, clear vision of where you want to go in life. Many people find meditation to be difficult because they just can’t turn off their thoughts. There is a big difference between average meditation and deep meditation. Both types of meditation require an equal amount of practice, however each will offer different results. Your average meditative process involves sitting for about 10 to 15 minutes with one’s eyes closed while concentrating on one’s breathing, the key is not to let the mind wander.

Deep meditation on the other hand can take years to master unless you know the proper techniques. There is a way to achieve serene deep meditation without devoting hours of practice. When beginning deep meditation one must insure they are sitting with the correct posture and are situated in an absolutely quiet environment.
