Meditation Explained

Meditation is a state of consciousness which allows of a deeper level of awareness and relaxation. Originating in the East meditation is now a common practice in the West as well, it has long been lauded as a great way to reduce stress and achieve mental and physical relaxation.

In order to meditate you must first focus your mind on a single point. Meditation is a practice that has been recognized by many religions since ancient times. There’s a wide variety of meditation styles to learn, each with its own spiritual and psycho-physical implications. With meditation one can achieve a higher state of consciousness that allows the mind to focus more clearly and reach a serene state.

Proper meditation requires one to sit in a comfortable position in a silent environment, one can focus their mind either on their breathing, on a preferred mantra or on visualizations. To achieve this higher awareness one must learn how the mind works. Once you understand the right thoughts and how they work you will be able to increase your levels of concentration and alertness for a calm, clear vision of where you want to go in life.

But, meditation can work for you somewhere other than a quiet environment. You can learn to do it while you walk or even as you do your daily chores. Meditation while walking can involve focusing on each step and the movement of one’s own body. Walking meditation can break down one’s thoughts with a heightened focus on perception while not becoming distracted by the final purpose of the meditation itself.

If you use visualizations in your meditation you can control the flow of energy starting down in your stomach and up through your entire body before releasing it into the air around you.

Tantra and yoga are both also forms of meditation, they are used both as exercise and as a religious practice.
